Announcing the 2025 Artist May 17th!

The Art Healthy Pledge & Challenge is open to all LBUSD students K-8, local to Dignity Health - St. Mary Medical Center. Submit your original artwork themed around “Heart Health” and “Family”, and it could be selected for permanent public display at St. Mary. Only one artist will be selected and announced on May 17, 2025, along with other selected artists who will receive honorable mentions. Then, there will be an official unveiling ceremony of your masterpiece at the hospital!

About the Art Challenge

The Art Healthy Pledge & Challenge is a dynamic, community-driven art challenge centered around the vital themes of “heart health” and “family wellness.” The challenge is open to LBUSD students local to Dignity Health St Mary Medical Center. Students submit their original artwork themed around heart health and family. A selected artwork will be announced on May 17, 2025 and will be prominently showcased at St Mary with an official unveiling ceremony.

Challenge Overview

1. Students and their school can take the pledge and share it online with hashtags #ArtHealthyLB #ArtHealthyChallenge and Dignity Health or MoLAA (Museum of Latin American Art) may share it!

2. Artwork Creation & Submission: Students create original artwork in various mediums including drawing, painting, and digital art (no AI). Artwork must be on a single page, no larger than 11"x17", and in a horizontal format.

3. Registration & Entry ID: Parents, legal guardians, or teachers must register students to obtain an entry ID. This ID or a signed permission form must accompany each submission.

4. Submission Deadline: Artwork entries will be accepted until Monday, May 12, 2025.

5. Judging Process: Entries will be evaluated based on originality, interpretation of the theme, creative techniques, composition, and overall art appearance. Officials from MoLAA and Dignity Health will select top submissions from each grade, which will then be reviewed by a panel of five judges.

6. Main Selections & Honorable Mentions: Main Selection artwork will be chosen to be digitized, enlarged, and publicly displayed at Dignity Health St. Mary. The Main Selection student will receive a commemorative plaque and art-themed promotional items featuring their artwork. Honorable Mentions will be selected in Digital, Collage/Multi-Media, Painting, and Drawing categories, and their artwork will be featured in a professional and commemorative way.

7. Unveiling Ceremony: The Main Selection winner will be announced on May 17th, and their artwork will be professionally displayed and unveiled during a special ceremony on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center celebrating both the artist and their school.

Awards & Prizes

The selected artwork will be digitized, enlarged, and showcased as a public work of art at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center in downtown Long Beach! The student whose artwork is chosen will receive a commemorative plaque and an art-themed swag bag featuring their design!

The selected artist will be announced on May 17th, and their artwork will be unveiled during a special ceremony in their honor on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center, celebrating both the artist and their school!

Didn't place first? That's okay; honorable mentions will be selected in various categories such as digital, collage, multimedia, painting, and drawing, among others, and their artwork will be featured in a professional and special way!

FAQs

1. Who is eligible to participate in the Art Healthy Challenge? The challenge is open to K-8 students enrolled in Long Beach Unified Schools.

2. What are the requirements for the artwork submitted to the challenge? All artwork must be the student's original creation and concept. It should not be a photograph. Acceptable mediums include drawing (pencil, charcoal, pastels, crayon, marker, chalk, ink), painting (oil, acrylics, watercolor, water-based, spray paint), and original digital creations (AI or digital image generation is not permitted). Digital art must be submitted as a high-resolution image (minimum 2400 x 2400 pixels) in .jpg, .pdf, or .png format. Each submission requires a Unique Student ID obtained during registration by a parent or guardian. If a teacher submits artwork, a signed permission form is necessary. Artwork must be on a single page, no larger than 11"x17", and in a horizontal format. The front should not have signatures or initials (these are allowed on the back). Artwork should avoid plagiarized quotations or text unless directly relevant and properly cited. Art derived from copyrighted sources like Disney, Marvel, DC Comics, Pixar, or copyrighted celebrity images will not be accepted. Only one entry per student is permitted.

3. How do students register and submit their artwork? Registrations must be submitted by a parent, legal guardian, or teacher online at www.arthealthylb.org or by scanning the QR code from the promotional materials. A parent or guardian must register their student to receive an Entry ID, which must be placed under the student's name on the artwork. An online entry form and a photo of the student must also be submitted by March 12, 2025. Online registrants must submit their original artwork if chosen to be a finalist. All entries must be original, unpublished, and previously unproduced. Each entry needs to be accompanied by a permission form or the student's unique entry ID.

4. What are the criteria used to judge the artwork? Entries will be evaluated based on several criteria, including originality, interpretation of the subject matter or theme, creative techniques used, the composition of the artwork, and its overall artistic appearance. Dignity Health officials will initially select top submissions from each grade, which will then be reviewed by a panel of five judges using these criteria to determine Main Selections and Honorable Mentions.

5. What are the prizes and recognition for Main Selections and Honorable Mentions? The Main Selection student will receive a commemorative plaque, art-themed t-shirts and/or promotional items featuring their artwork. Their original artwork will be digitized and enlarged for public display at a Dignity Health facility, which will be unveiled at a special ceremony on Friday, June 6th. If sponsorship and materials allow, the main selected artist's school may also receive goods and services. Honorable mention artwork will be featured in a professional commemorative way (calendar, flip book, or in a similar commemorative way). Selections will be based on the following categories: digital, collage/multi-media, painting, and drawing.

6. What rules govern the use of trademarks, copyrighted material, and personal information? Artwork cannot include registered trademarks or licensed logos that are not part of the student's original work. Art derived from copyrighted sources is prohibited. By participating, entrants grant CommonSpirit Health the right to use their name, photo, biographical information, and artwork for advertising and promotional purposes, including on their website and in future challenges. They also grant the right to use their name, address, and email to contact them, their guardian, and their teacher about the challenge. Personal information collected will be used according to CommonSpirit Health's privacy policy. CommonSpirit Health may display submitted artwork on their website and social media, typically showing the first name, last initial, age, state, and photo of the entrant with their art. Main Selection and Honorable Mention students may have more detailed information (full name, age, state, photo, short bio) shared.

7. Are there any restrictions on who can participate? Officers, directors, and employees of CommonSpirit Health, Long Beach Unified Schools, Museum of Latin American Art, and their related entities, including their immediate family members and those living in the same household, are not eligible to enter the challenge or be selected. The challenge is void where prohibited.

8. What happens to the submitted artwork and related materials? Submissions will not be returned or acknowledged, and proof of submission is not proof of receipt. CommonSpirit Health is not liable for lost, intercepted, or unreceived submissions. Once submitted, artwork may be displayed on Dignity Health's website and social media. No substitutions or new versions of submissions will be accepted. CommonSpirit Health reserves the right to disqualify any submission deemed objectionable. Entries chosen for Honorable Mentions will be considered for publication in a professionally bound book, but not all entries will be selected for the book or online display.
